india needs a hangman
NYT series about India
India has 1.2 billion people, among them bankers, gurus, rag pickers, billionaires, snake charmers, software engineers, lentil farmers, rickshaw drivers, Maoist rebels, Bollywood movie stars and Vedic scholars, to name a few. Humanity runneth over. Except in one profession: India is searching for a hangman.
if hangings are not that common, why does the govt need a hangman? why cant the jailer handle the hanging?
Jim Yardley seems to have parked himself in India for the time being.

Not many people want that on their conscience.

Even in Saudi Arabia, the Mecca for capital punishment (no pun intended), the decapatitating, the chopping of fingers, limbs, and other assorted organs is outsourced to Ethiopians and Sudanese specialists in the kingdom. Koran or not, Saudis consider it below their dignity to do those things themselves.

Perhaps those Pakistani Rangers were trying to build their resumes for Saudi jobs when they shot the poor young man and left him to die.indophile wrote:Even in Saudi Arabia, the Mecca for capital punishment (no pun intended), the decapatitating, the chopping of fingers, limbs, and other assorted organs is outsourced to Ethiopians and Sudanese specialists in the kingdom. Seriously though, do they employ non-Muslims to do that work? I thought Ethiopia was mostly Christian (particularly after Eritrea separated.)

I don't know if the sharia law ordains that the executioner be muslim.
By Ethiopia I meant Ethiopia/Eritrea/Somalia (i.e., the old Ethiopia).
It seems there is a place called sook or suk in Riyadh, where these things happen every Friday in a public square. Many Americans/Europeans go there with their video cameras. The place is nicknamed chop-chop square.

Suk is Arabic for market, if I remember right. So they do chop-chop in the bazaar.

Yeah, they do it (or get it done) in a public pl ace. The theory is that it serves as a deterrent. The fact that they keep serving this deterrent week after week proves that theory suspect. Probably it serves as a deterrent to some but not all, i.e., for the likes of poor Philippinos, Pakistanis, and Indians, who form a disproportionately high percentage of those who receive those sorts of punishment.
