India asks US Embassy to remove an officer
"NEW DELHI — India asked the United States on Friday to withdraw a diplomat from the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, the latest retaliation in a smoldering diplomatic dispute touched off by the arrest and strip search of an Indian diplomat in New York.
But on Friday evening, the Foreign Ministry said an unidentified American diplomat of the same rank as Khobragade was somehow involved in the case and should leave the country, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. Requesting the recall of a diplomat is a serious, and fairly unusual, move that sends a message to Washington that India’s government doesn’t accept the legitimacy of the court action in New York."

-> Wow! the saga continues.

That is normal diplomatic practice. you send one out and we will send one in response. it has nothing to do with right or wrong.
hopefully that ends the flare up.
India still needs to clean up its act.

It seems this guy from the U.S Embassy was personally involved in "evacuating" the maid's family from India. He personally bought tickets for them with tax free U.S. Embassy funds.

And why is the 'mis-use' of diplomatic card for a non-diplomatic purpose not a crime? I was thinking India would initiate an investigation, charge sheet him in a sessions court and then let him go.

May be Preet Bharara equivalent in Delhi has no political ambitions.
Who does the chargesheeting in India, the public prosecutor or the police?

Re: India asks US Embassy to remove an officer
>>>That could have been a reasonable course of action. In this case, this could have been a deal worked out with the US during the DK negotiations. It is unlikely that this issue didn't come up. Maybe India used this for leverage. If Bharara had not gone off half-cocked with his grandstanding and the media circus that followed, something concrete could have been achieved like a restitution payment to the maid and DK could still have been kicked out on the basis of discovery (of fraudulence). This diplomatic crisis would have been much more limited in scope instead of this full scale derailing.smArtha wrote:indophile wrote:It seems this guy from the U.S Embassy was personally involved in "evacuating" the maid's family from India. US probably would argue that they are the witness/asylum seekers to expose the crime in US soil. So they may have the right to protect them by any means?

Sure they can, but they've no right protect them by any means, as they're Indian citizens and this took place in India when legal proceedings are underway.

"No offence to Devyani Khobragade, but if the Indian government could take on the US for a consul employee, then why is it not doing anything when hundreds have died here," he asked.
