Eleven girls and three boys were also part of the farm hands. The rescued labourers belong to the Irular community which is found in Kancheepuram, Thiruvannamalai and Vellore districts.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a contractor named Suresh had hired the workers after paying Rs 4,000 to Rs 11,000 per family. The amount varied upon the number of people willing to work for a year. The labourers had to work wherever the contractor assigned duty.

Suresh is a resident of of Panrutti in Cuddalore district.

The rescued workers said they were made to work for 12 to 14 hours per day, though they were allowed two month's holiday to attend temple festival in their villages. "The labourers were allegedly verbally abused and physically tortured by Suresh. So, they contacted the Childline number 1098," said Mary.

On Tuesday, Pudukkottai RDO Rajaraman handed over financial aid to the rescued people. The authorities are mulling over rehabilitation measures to the homeless workers.
