In 2008, a Purdue University committee, in a follow-up probe after an earlier investigation found no fraud, said Taleyarkhan was guilty of two counts of research misconduct. He was accused of wrongly adding a student’s name to papers as a witness to experiments and claiming that two students at Purdue had independently replicated his experiment, an opinion that only he and his co-authors shared, New Energy Times said.

Taleyarkhan made mistakes, the magazine pointed out. He responded to his critics in scientific journals, but failed to “proactively respond to his critics and their often-incorrect and damaging statements in the popular media” and “waited until the last possible day to file a defamation lawsuit” in 2008.

Taleyarkhan claimed the charges he was found guilty of related to “trivial administrative issues” and did not impact his results.

Purdue University, after its 2008 investigation, took away his endowed professorship, reduced his salary and limited his duties with students. He was also debarred by the U.S. Defense Department, which had funded his research.

Before the probe, he was forced to resign as the head of the School of Nuclear Engineering, but the demotion was not publicly announced.

The Mumbai-born Taleyarkhan has a degree in mechanical engineer from the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras. After he came to the U.S. he obtained a master’s degree in nuclear engineering and a Ph.D. degree in nuclear engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

In 2001, Taleyarkhan, then in the engineering technology division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, and his team tried to experimentally demonstrate and confirm the long-predicted phenomenon of nuclear reactions in cavitating liquids.

In 2002, the pro se plaintiff, Rusi P. Taleyarkhan, led a team of scientific researchers in the discovery of sonofusion. The defendant, Purdue University, recruited Taleyarkhan in 2003 as a professor and researcher. While employed at Purdue, a university administrator, L. Tsoukalas, began calling Taleyarkhan's sonofusion research into question. Taleyarkhan alleges that Tsoukalas organized investigatory committees and publically accused Taleyarkhan of research misconduct. Taleyarkhan further alleges that he suffered harassment in the form of racial name calling and ridicule at the hands of Purdue's staff because of his Indian descent.

>>>Do you believe the Khan guy's allegations that he was subjected to racial name calling by people at Purdue?

This Khan is very likely a Farsi and not a Musalman. This is many years old. Why posting it now?

I came across a couple of more recent ones including a federal felony case against one. There was another big Desi prof at a texas Univ. in legal problems 5 yrs back.

In most of these cases, the match is usually set alight by vengeful administrators against the not-so-cooperative profs. While the mistakes are real, they are often minor. However, when admins were involved in a big manner, everything was sorted out quietly. Of course, if it involves external money and women then all bets are off.

Anyway this guy still works there as a full prof. He was made to step down as Department Head and endowed professorship. These are the hidden dangers in academia. This guy is lucky bcz usually, the guy in such a scandal is finished and no one will hire him anywhere in any position.
