BJP leader Arun Jaitley makes a fatal mistake Empty BJP leader Arun Jaitley makes a fatal mistake

Hartosh Singh Bal, former political editor of Open magazine, has tweeted that he has just returned from a visit to Amritsar and the people he conversed with (and this included BJP workers) are saying that Jaitley's decision to contest from Amritsar is probably his worst mistake in his political career. The Congress has fielded a heavyweight--Captain Amrindar Singh, former Chief Minister of Punjab--against Jaitley who is going around calling Jaitley an 'outsider'. Jaitley is a punjabi, but he has never lived in Punjab permanently apart from travels/visits. Also, Amritsar has traditionally elected a Sikh to be a member of parliament--almost always.

In my opinion, Jaitley should have contested from Gujarat. Then he would have surely won. I think what Jaitley must have thought was that if he would be a Gujarat Lok Sabha MP then people would not respect him, nor would Modi, since the perception would be that he won his election because of Modi. In the quest to be his own man, Jaitley may have made a serious blunder and it now appears he will probably lose from Amritsar to Amrindar.
