Mr. Modi: What is the need for all this extravaganza?
AFAIK when a new government is elected in Britain, the new PM takes over in a low-key manner. Modi should take oath at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan and immediately get on with the business of governing the country. Thousands of crores of rupees is going to be wasted for entertaining the foreign dignitaries, so called VIPs in India, on security arrangements and travel.
A man who rose from a humble beginning should have known better.

No matter what's done in the UK, I agree with you; I'm tired of all the excitement about the special arrangements being made for "VIPs" and "VVIPs" at enormous cost and inconvenience to the public.Rishi wrote:AFAIK when a new government is elected in Britain, the new PM takes over in a low-key manner. A nice thing to do would have been to invite one randomly-selected person from each state to.attend the swearing-in at public expense.

He's working on his diplomatic ties with the foreign countries using this occassion. He's sending a message that he's starting on a clean slate. All this expense is worth it.

>>>Why the comparison with Britain? Anyway, this showmanship is along the lines of a new car dealer or a grocery chain store setting up shop with fanfare in new neighborhoods to get visibility. The foreign dignitary invites is part of a move to show that he is ready to develop friendships and do business. The 'humble beginnings' and the implied axiomatic Spartan approach to budgeting makes for good copy on the campaign trail, but not so much when you are also taking on the role of the country's Chief Marketing Officer.

Re: Mr. Modi: What is the need for all this extravaganza?
Modi's invite to SAARC to neighboring countries is a smart move. BJP think tank probably did not expect the firestorm on SL leader invitation. My view is that the think tank thought SAARC invitation would be a good cover for Pakistani leader visit. They probably did not pay enough attention to Tamil equation.
Expenditure would be minimal if relationship with Pakistan changes over a period of time. As max pointed in his post it is a lame accusation.
Modi is also sending the message that India realizes it exists in south asia and coexistence with neighbours is as important as dealing with big economies.
