About Dr. Devi Shetty
Dr. Devi Shetty is the Chairman of the Narayana Hrudayalaya Group of Hospitals. A pioneer in cardiac healthcare, Dr. Shetty and his team have performed over 70,000 major heart surgeries, of which 15,000 were for children, many of them newborns. He has several firsts to his credit – he was the first heart surgeon in India to perform heart surgeries on newborns, and to use microchip cameras to close holes in the heart. He pioneered operations for complex conditions such as pulmonary endarterectomy, redo heart surgery, valve repairs in newborns, and aortic aneurysm.
Dr. Shetty manages a large chain of rural clinics in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, and helped the Karnataka government launch the largest micro-health insurance program in the world. He also manages the world’s largest telemedicine program through the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). In collaboration with Ms. Kiran Shaw of Biocon, he launched Arogya Raksha Yojana, to provide affordable heathcare to the poorest of the poor.
Several awards have been conferred on Dr. Shetty for his selfless work in providing healthcare to the deprived sections of society. A few of his many awards include the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors, the Social Entrepreneurship Award at the World Economic Forum, and the Indian of the Year by NDTV.
