Hyderabad: Beef Festival turns Osmania University into a battlefield
Hyderabad: A student of the Osmania university here was stabbed for supporting a beef festival organised by several student groups opposing "food fascism" in hostels, police said Monday. The beef festival saw clashes, which saw five students being injured, and even led to vehicles being burnt.
The situation in the university was tense as violence continued in the campus past midnight with a group of students attacking the 'C' hostel and stabbing a student for supporting the beef festival. Police said the injured student was admitted to Gandhi Hospital here.
Protestors set afire a bus of state-owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).
The clashes broke out Sunday night after some Dalit and left-wing student groups organised a beef festival on the campus, to highlight their demand for including beef in the hostel menu. Over 200 students and some professors attended the festival and ate various dishes made of beef.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists staged a protest against the festival and clashed with the organisers. The two groups attacked each other with stones and sticks. Five students were injured in the clashes. Two vehicles were also set afire.
Police used teargas shells and batons to disperse the clashing groups. The campus, which witnessed many violent protests over separate Telangana state during last two years, turned into a battlefield.
The beef festival was organised by Telangana Students Association, Progressive Democratic Student Union, Student Federation of India and student groups from English and Foreign Languages University.
The organisers claimed that beef is the part of their cultural identity and an affordable source of nutrition. They said the festival was to oppose 'food fascism' in university hostels.
Supporting the demand, P.L. Visweswara Rao, former professor of communication and journalism at the university, said students have a right to seek a particular food. He alleged that the police and the university administration failed to protect the students participating in the festival.
Th ABVP, which opposed the beef festival, called for university shutdown Monday.
Police have sealed all the routes leading to the university and deployed additional police and paramilitary forces on the campus to prevent further clashes. (IANS)

This is old news and ppl talked abt it to death back in the day. The conclusion was: if there were a pork festival in OU, it would've ended up in communal riots. Does anyone have the guts to support it?

It seemed to be strangely relevant after Vakavaka told me that Beef obsession was a BIMARU trait. I am pretty sure he wasn't around on this forum when this news from his own backyard was discussed and hence thought of posting this.

Rashmun should join (along with Kancha) and sing sikular songs in praise of the pampered vote-bank.
They should also organize a pork rotisserie festival in Mecca and invite Mani Skunkar Aiyer, K'nidhi, CONartists, Nitish, Laloo, MT, etc.

If they want to eat Beef in private, I think nobody cares. But I am not sure what purpose is served by having a festival! Will these organizers, also dare to conduct a pork festival on the day of Eid or Muharram, in and around Charminar ?Rashmun wrote:Kinnera wrote:This is old news and ppl talked abt it to death back in the day. Comments by one of the candidates on the beef and pork festival planned to be held on the campus later this month led to a scuffle during the presidential debate in JNU on Thursday.
The debate ahead of the JNUSU elections was disrupted for more than 20 minutes as statements made by Independent candidate Sandeep Kumar angered students, some of whom ran over barricades and tried to manhandle him.
Sandeep used unparliamentary language against students group,The New Materialists, who had announced that a beef and pork festival would be held on the campus later this month.
He also criticised the AISA-led unions efforts to collect funds for the Burmese refugees earlier this year and the reservation policy for admissions.
This led some of the students to push through the barricades to reach the stage.
University guards formed a human chain on the stage to stop the students from manhandling election committee members and other presidential candidates who were seated on the stage.
The students refused to leave the stage until Sandeep apologised for hurting their sentiments.
Sandeep was not allowed to finish his speech and was made to apologise to the students after the election committees intervention.
An eight-member delegation of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad,Bajrang Dal,Akhand Hindusthan Morcha and the ABVP met the JNU Vice-Chancellor S K Sopory on Thursday and submitted a memorandum demanding action against the organisers of the beef and pork festival.
VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal told Newsline that the delegation has given the university time till Friday to debar the candidates from contesting in the elections and also suspending them from the university. If no action is taken,we will complain to the L-G, Bansal said.
