HYDERABAD: On the eve of the much-touted World Metropolis Congress to be held in the city, denizens woke up to the news they have been dreading every day, given the pathetic condition of civic infrastructure. A 66-year-old man, who was returning home after celebrating Dasara at a relative's house, died after he fell into an open manhole at Himayatnagar. Though he fell on Saturday night, the incident came to light on Sunday when locals and sanitation workers noticed the body in the manhole.

Ironically, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is hosting the four-day Congress on the theme 'Cities For All'.

The victim was identified as Hemanth Kumar Sahay, 66, a retired private employee and resident of Street No. 6, Himayatnagar. On Saturday, Hemanth along with his family members had gone to celebrate Dasara at a relative's house in Gachibowli. As his family members wanted to stay back a while longer at the relative's place, Hemanth decided to return home. Around 11 pm, Hemanth's younger brother Piyush Sahay dropped him on a two-wheeler near Street No. 6 of Himayatnagar. While walking home to his apartment, Sadguna Apartment, he slipped and fell into the open manhole.
