Delhi Police to go to court to stop the airing of the film

British filmmaker Leslee Udwin’s documentary featuring interviews of the men convicted of the 2012 gang rape and murder of a young woman was at the centre of a controversy on Tuesday as Delhi Police said they would go to court to stop the airing of the film.

“We are going to move the court against the broadcast of such inputs,” Delhi Police commissioner BS Bassi told reporters. “This was a ghastly crime and the law has been broken, we will investigate the case.”

Bassi said police were filing a first information report (FIR) on the basis of media reports on the documentary “India’s Daughter” that will be broadcast on TV channels round the world, including in India, on International Women’s Day on March 8.

The police acted after home minister Rajnath Singh took strong exception to interviews conducted with the rapists in Tihar Jail and sought a report from the prison’s director general Alok Kumar Verma. Singh spoke to Verma on the issue, official sources said.

Beatrix Kiddo wrote:I don't understand... why stop it? If a protocol was broken and tihar jail didn't formally approve the raw footage, then selling of it to bbc was a wrong/illegal move. But other than that, why not show the documentary? If he said stupid things, then let there be a dialog on it.

"In the name of exposing the rapist, it gives an open platform to the rapist and encouraging other rapists,” said Arnab Goswami, editor of the news channel Times Now. He called it the “ultimate insult” to the victim to air the film.

-> As biased as this documentary sounds, it won't do India any good with their attempts to stop the airing of the film, IMO.
