Re: Kashmiri hardliner freed
NEW DELHI: Hurriyat hardliner and militant sympathizer Masarat Alam has been released from prison after four years on Saturday, PTI has reported.
This comes after Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's order to release separatists and militants who have not been charged with any offence yet.
Earlier the Jammu & Kashmir Police said it will comply with the directions of Sayeed.
Alam who has dozens of cases including waging of war against him and also carried a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh for information leading to his arrest.
Alam, 44, who had spearheaded stone-pelting agitations here between 2008 and 2010, was brought out of Baramulla District Jail and taken to Shaheed Gunj police station where he was handed over to his family members, official sources said in Srinagar.
Alam, once considered a confidante of hardline Syed Ali Shah Geelani, was a prize catch in 2010 when he had been issuing calenders for shut downs and stone pelting.
He went underground when police went after him for his anti-national activities.
Alam was apprehended in Harwan area on the outskirts of the Srinagar in October, 2010 in an operation in which police and central agencies had been tracking every detail of his movement in the city.
"Yes, all the directions issued by the government (on release of separatists and militants from jails in the state) will be complied with. Let us be assured about it," director general of police (DGP), J&K, K Rajendra Kumar told reporters in Jammu on Saturday.
In a meeting with the police chief in Jammu on Wednesday, Sayeed had asked the police to initiate a process of releasing all political prisoners in the state against whom no criminal charges have been registered.
He had also directed the DGP to prepare a comprehensive plan for the rehabilitation of surrendered and released militants.

cd
bjp and pdp alliance will break the status quo. Kashmir will either descend into chaos or inch towards a solution. This is a high risk strategy with huge probability of failure. But Modi took the bold gamble. Sayeed is taking steps to appease the conservative wing of his party and hurriyat to manage the fall out of joining with BJP.
This a rocky alliance of opposites that will continue to make headlines. Can PDP and BJP persevere to allow a solution to take hold? If they can survive together for couple of years, J&K will change dramatically.
