hindu mythology tells you explicitly with pictures to not mess with women. this should be your screen saver. just a suggestion.

No need for this extra masochism. 'Holy matrimony' is more than enough. Just saying as you take the plunge Smile

--> My interest in this picture arose because of a discussion with someone about why Kali's tongue is hanging out in that picture. Any idea about this?

Don't ever ever argue with me, and control your tongue.

--> here is a better answer: when she goes mad with anger, and the world is shaking because of her fury, Shiva throws himself before her and lies prostrate before her and when she steps on him her tongue comes out because of her embarrassment at trampling him and then she cools down.

Dude,

the tongue has less to do with Siva. He was probably knocked out in the battle. She just killed the demon and is drinking his blood to quench her thirst. Her tongue is hanging out because she is in the process of slurping the blood.

Most common pictures show demon's body under feet. But in this age of internet and photo doctoring, anything is possible.

Rashmun's explanation is correct.

Rashmun's explanation is correct.

it is possible that both explanations are correct. In different Puranas the same story is often narrated with minor or significant variations.

Yes. That happens often. I should have said that it is one of the prevalent versions.

While the general belief is that mahakali is a form of adi shakti and Parvati is Aadi shakti, I am not sure that even in puranic stories there is a description of Siva and Mahakali living together.

Mahakali is an avtar of AAdi shakti to complete a task. When the task is done AAdi shakti returns to her normal form.

Mahakali and other forms were more primitive matriarchical tribal gods that were incorporated into Hindu puranas of later days.

Mahakali being embarassed is a laughable execuse for a hanging out of tongue of a person holding a decapitated head and a bowl collecting the blood dripping from that head. Mahakali is a blood thirsty Goddess (or whatever you want to call her or it) and you can see her tongue hanging out in temples also.

Shiva in Kali iconography

In both these images she is shown standing on the prone, inert or dead body of Shiva.
There is a mythological story for the reason behind her standing on
what appears to be Shiva's corpse, which translates as follows:

<blockquote>
Once Kali had destroyed all the demons in battle, she began a terrific dance out of the sheer joy of victory. All the worlds or lokas
began to tremble and sway under the impact of her dance. So, at the
request of all the Gods, Shiva himself asked her to desist from this
behavior. However, she was too intoxicated to listen. Hence, Shiva lay
like a corpse among the slain demons in order to absorb the shock of the
dance into himself. When Kali eventually stepped upon her husband she
realized her mistake and bit her tongue in shame.[38]

That is one story. but kali was shown in all almost every temple with her tongue hanging out and with a blood dripping head in her hand. Why is her tongue drooling in those statues, vigrahas and pictures.

--> the blood is dripping from Kali because she has killed some rakshasas. The tongue hangs out either because she is slurping (or about to slurp) the blood of some of the rakshasas (your version); or else because she has trampled upon a prostate Lord Shiva and on seeing what she has done she becomes ashamed or embarrassed (my version).

--> Often there are more than one traditions or interpretations with respect to specific stories and incidents in hindu mythology.
