It's y'all. When you write it as you'all, why do u need to put the apostrophe between you and all? There's no contraction there.

Re: A Dixie question
either people say you'll as in "you'll do this now or I will report you"
or" how are you all ?" where there is no need of an apostrophe
Southerners say "Ya'll come back you hear ? "
It's spelt Ya'll not y'all
where an apostrophe is inserted in place of a dropped letter .
It's always thus

The you'll here is you+will. Refers to a second person singular. It's not you+all, a second person plural. You'll is not the same as y'all.

Obvious. There is no contraction.

Ya'll is wrong. You are dropping 'ou' in 'you', so the apostraphe takes the place where 'ou' shld be, which is after the 'Y', not after 'a'. You are not dropping anything after 'a' in 'all'. So you don't put an apostrophe after 'a'. eg: The contraction of cannot is can't. The apostraphe takes the place where it's contracted (no in cannot).
So y'all is how it shld be.
Pls refer to the link I gave above for the pronunciation, spelling, meaning/usage of y'all.

Re: A Dixie question
needed to say one more thing Kris
.Since the southerners drawl out" yau all " instead of" you all "
the apostrophe needs to be after the " a "
in essence it is" ya'll "

Re: A Dixie question
Mister Sir,
You just have to come down here..like Mister Romney said "eat some "cheesy grits"- get them hugs from 12 year and above Southern girls..get all wet and comfy like a can of sardines" ..(bless his heart- I would love to read his love letters..what a romantic he is !) and see for yourself!
But, who knows? Nothing surprises me..he may be the Yankee who gets a lot of votes in Dixie!
It's obviously..sometimes ya'all..sometimes..you'all..sometimes..y'all..all depends on who says it..when and where! (if it's not for some English Paper!)

Re: A Dixie question
Chameli,
This thread reminds me of the movie "My Cousin Vinny"..have you seen it?
It's funny to see the contrast in various accents, mannerisms..esp. with Joe Pesci and Marissa Tomei in a Southern courtroom. Seriously (you may already know this) most small town courtrooms in the South are very much the same as depicted in the movie..the Judge, Lawyers..the atmosphere in general!
