1. Mayan civilization got its name from a couple of brits who wanted to associate magic with that culture and used the sanskrit word Maya to signify them. They did not refer to themselves as Mayans.

2. Lot of usual star-gazing and philosophizing led them to conclude what appears above is repeated below - so they built structures to resemble ursa major and other constellations with usual special place to sun, moon etc. Calendars were circular and they believed in recycling of eons - kinda similar to hindus. So they DID NOT contrary to popular misconception and ill-informed cartoon jokes think the world was going to end in 2012. Just that their calendar would come to an end and a fresh start of 400 years would begin.

3. They used a base-20 numeral system. As an exercise, you can try to figure out how to write 1721 in mayan numeral form.

4. Ek Balam is less touristy and fairly new excavation and restoration. Tourists get a kick out of seeing the ball arena where the losing team's captain got beheaded. The structures are fairly typical of ancient indian ruins with very small rooms and no windows for the aristocrats.

5. Cenote's there are thousands of them in yucatan and the sink holes (huge cavernous structures with a hole in the rock roof above) lead to a stagnant body of rain water and ground water in which a refreshing dip after an arduous journey is welcome - well lit and fun its highly recommended.

6. Mayan cuisine is supposedly different from the plain vanilla mexican one but with untrained palate I couldnt tell the difference. Good veggie choices. Playa del carmen or carmen's beach has a fifth avenue shopping where items are to be routinely bargained down to 1/4th its list price after controlling for factors such as your dress and general touristy demeanor.

see ya'll friday or next week...after residues of azure and tourquoise wears off.

So you dragged along your jetlagged wife to a vacation? Paapam!

Interesting facts there. Any pix?

Sounds fascinating. We almost went to the Mayan riviera last winter, but had to change plans two weeks before. May be this winter.

Was in Cancun with side trips to Cozumel and Chichen Itza a few years ago. The down side was the timing- spring break and the heat, but the upside was the side trips. The pyramids blew my mind. One major highlight: the muliple types of margaritas with the carib tilt. The food *was* great at the restaurants, partly because they don't stuff you like in the mexican joints state-side.

today I met a native american, who is now 65. She looked like a "red Indian" and she was adopted by well educated white upper middle class couple - the father was a renowned professor. She and I were talking about Indian culture, hindu religious structures and practices and those of the Native Americans. One would think the similarities are as close as those between the Jewish-Isalamic civilizations.

it's like that in the andamans right now; though soon it will be a vast wasteland of broken beer bottles, ugly plastic bags that once held potato chips coated with various sickly melange of indian spices, and empty plastic water bottles. all lovingly gifted to the pristine andaman beaches by unthinking, morbidly obese, and moronic indians.
