Is your question: How do studies get affected if students watch porn?
If that is so, i think the answer is, 'they lose their focus on studies'.

I wasn't specifically talking about iits, but even in those settings, even if there are a dozen people within 100 feet around you, you still are mostly heads down with books/laptops and in your own thoughts. Also socializing a bit lesser, and you spend more time in your room. Actually, take back what I said about socializing. All the guys in my school would go out and see movies during exams, and then stay up all nights studying.

wrong! there is a LOT of group work and group studying that goes on. this may include "cracking" tute sheets (tutorial sheets) together, solving prior years' exams, writing lab reports, and working on computational assignments in pairs or small groups. in fact it takes some effort to get away from the group mode and carve out some alone time. i personally had it bad during the exams because my mode of studying started by boning up on my "fundas" (basic knowledge) by thoroughly going through the textbook material first before i touched the first tute sheet problem. so i had to start way earlier than the "tute sheet engineers" and i'd still be behind. i was quite studious, so many of the tute sheet engineers used to badger me to help them with problems well before i started on them. i had to hang a sign outside my door telling folks that i hadn't yet looked at a single tute sheet!
the other regular activity that carved out some alone time for me was long distance running along the vihar pipelines starting at the NITIE campus gates.

I don't think they had access to porn 20+ yrs ago in college campuses. They didn't have internet back in the day. Bollywood movies were the stress busters.

From what I know, there would be VHS. And now from reading Max's description of group studies in hostels, I am thinking watching it was a group activity as well, atleast in hostels.

Yes, they did- more "normal porn"..if that's the right term!
Obviously, it was not as accessible via the internet as it is now- leading to porn addictions, and not as violent and extremely bizarre as some are now.

the internet wasn't the only source of porn. there were always penthouse, hustler, and euro porn mags available aplenty. lots of folks had their own private stash. and every so often we'd have a movie night at the hostel which began with bollywood and hollywood movies and turned to hardcore porn as the night progressed. the hostel watchie (watchman) had to act as gate keeper to warn us (in the unlikely scenario) of approaching authority figures like wardens, parents etc.

If you are to include magazines..I would call them nudity and more erotica (not porn- where people are mostly objectified- at least some make that distinction)..have to go back to the beginning of time..am sure they were expressed in various forms of art..including the Kamasutra!

There was one such famous place in the town of insignificant size where I went to college. When they got caught, as they did with not insignificant frequency, they used to argue that it was all a mistake. The Bollywood movie they were showing had somehow gotten spliced with porn that they didn't know was in there. these days kids have it easy. Go online and BAM you have naked women. Those days we have to walk uphill 10 miles to and fro, to get any porn. Even after all of that, it would be on a VHS tape displayed on a tiny 16 inch TV. Camera angles were bad. Women were hairy. Guys were all mustachioed. But we marched on and attained moksha... Kids these days have it easy.

For the first time in human history, porn is available to a large number of people at little to no cost. Researchers ought to look into what this easy availability of porn is doing to physical and mental health, and productivity. LOL @ DM. well, I hear some expats still watch desi porn on CDs on their visits, many times with old still-local friends, to sorta reminisce good ole days, and maybe compare/contrast the 'progress'.

BIG difference these days... girls are equally willing to do the dirty talking and cybering. To some extent, this is also a very equal field now, BOTH are predators. Telling ya, 15-year-old guys has never had it this easy before.

**hi, i'm not supposed to be online right now. however i feel strongly about this so i had to log in. i think porn is a DUGIO problem. i was reading max say that it brought sanity to the students at IIT. Sure. Now imagine being pummelled with this crap everywhere you turn as is the case nowadays and imagine guys with average IQs,average levels of motivation, and average levels of opp being dished this out. they get addicted to it and their careers and relationships suffer.

you don't understand. it's not like it's a choice. many of us would have preferred the company of real women, but the sex ratio on campus at the IITs was skewed in the extreme. there simply was no other choice. the choice was between heterosexual porn and actual homosexuality. once we left campus and met and had relationships with real women, i'd like to think most of us grew out of porn.
