Lingayat vote is a large vote block with one or two Big politicians (Bangarappa used to exploit that), whereas the Gowda vote is split among various Gowda politicians.

BJP has literally wasted its chance in running a clean "show-case" govt in the South. It will take a very long time to recover from this - at least 10 to 15 years. BSY was weak during his first year - remember his crying in front of camera - and the BJP stood by him. With the Mine Looters under pressure, BSY has become a powerful guy with his own followers.

Even BJP ruled the center, I doubt there will be ANY change in the Corruption model that is running the Indian democracy.

Lingayats constitute a separate caste of their own. Gowdas are a part of the Vokkaliga caste. Lingayats and Vokkaligas are the dominant castes (politically) in Karnataka and typically the ruling party in Karnataka usually has the support of either Lingayats or Vokkaligas (but typically not both since there is rivalry between the two castes).
