In Tamil, the word 'karam' means 'hand'. Karam + Aatti (martial arts using hands) = Karaatti = Karate

I am nit sure it is established that telugu is an off shoot of tamil. Spoken telugu existed for a long time. Written telugu was around at least from 500 ad. Kannada was around even earlirr than telugu.

depends on where you draw the time line doesn't it? malayali historians consider the tamils sangam literature as part of their literary legacy too, since it was written in the era that precedes the split of malayalam from tamil. depending on when these things came into being, you could say the same thing of martial arts too.
