Trivia - three questions Empty Trivia - three questions

Post by Idéfix Tue Jan 15, 2013 12:30 am

1. The modern name of this city sounds like “twelve preachers.” It is an ancient city at the edge of a famous valley, and its original name means “boar’s molar.” The city was visited by the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang and the Mughal emperors Akbar and Jahangir. What is the modern name of this city? And the ancient name?

2. During WWII, this Indian pilot joined the Royal Indian Air Force and became the head of its transport command. When India decided to airlift soldiers to Kashmir in October 1947, he piloted the first Indian Air Force plane to land in Srinagar. He assisted the fledgling nation of Indonesia in 1947, and was rewarded for his efforts with honorary citizenship and the country’s highest award. He named Megawati Sukarnoputri at Sukarno’s request. Name this person.

3. Below is a picture of a statue that stands on top of the dome of the United States Capitol building in Washington. The statue was placed on the building in 1863. Name the statue.

3. Statue of Freedom.

To symbolize Native Americans..Lady Freedom wears a head dress(?) with eagle's feathers, among her other symbolic parts. The statue is made in bronze with platinum tips- not sure when the tips were added to prevent lightning..something like that.

Hope to see her again, very, very soon:)

Lady Freedom. They had a helicopter lift the lady from atop Capitol and lower it on the lawn. I saw the statue real close when it was on the ground. They lowered her to hose out with mild chemicals the more than 100 years of pigeon shit that caked on her.

No, it is in Baramulla, the last town in Kashmir valley that fell to the Pathan tribals on their 1947 raid backed by Pakistan army.

No, it is Biju Patnaik, former Chief Minister of Orissa and father of the current Chief Minister.

Only a part of question 1 remains:

1. The modern name of this city is Baramulla. It is an ancient city at the edge of Kashmir valley, and its original Sanskrit name means “boar’s molar” (or more literally, "boar's root"). The city was visited by the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang and the Mughal emperors Akbar and Jahangir. What is the ancient name of this city?

Using Sanskrit, that would be Varaha-mula.
