Maybe the lithe, once-virile Unkil is cockeyed if not shifty-eyed.

HA might have a pic handy, so we can judge.

Don't you get it? Just like you made a galouti paniyaram, he's made a galouti golgappa. Instead of the pinch of aloo (and moong etc), he's stuffing the puri with a pinch of the galouti kebab. And I assume instead of paani, he's filling the poori with the mint lassi whatever. It's brilliant.

Must be keeping a hot piece of charcoal next to a bunch of galouti kebabs and covering it up to give the kebabs a smoky flavor. I was at the Oberoi in Gurgaon yday and some joker had tried this stunt with the mutton seekh kebabs and the outcome was terrible. While smoky tastes good on plain grilled meats, it tastes horrendous with our flavored meats.

Critical mass audience?? Sir, you are on SUCH. This is a very exclusive forum for the most critical thinkers of the age around the world. And we like what you post. So stop this Gandhian nonsense and keep posting.

yeah, i think you got it there. sounds interesting now -- smoked galouti golgappas with lassi.

LOL! yes i totally agree -- smoky is good only with plain or bare minimum marinated grilled meat.

ha ha @ most criticaL thinkers of age. i think i'm missing psychos too. i think that's it. after sara boji decided to go mum, the psycho quotient (part of "critical mass") has plummeted. well, i think i'll play the role of a psycho henceforth so i can feel comfortable in such. Razz

I celebrated Obummer's re-election victory with a lunch consisting of:

Salmon gravlax
Beef in pepper sauce with steamed rice
Duck legs and orange confit
Steamed jumbo prawns

Dinner was at a Thai restaurant. Had some real yummy green curry with roast duck and white rice, washed down with some fine Malbec.

Post dinner was this session at a whisky bar. Broke my 2-drink rule and had four shots of Benriach 15 y.o. singe malt. Hic. Cheersh Obummer.

To celebrate the rich irony of Bal Thackeray and Kasab reaching the netherworld at about the same time, I headed over to Mohammad Ali Road for lunch and feasted on shammi kebabs, chicken sanju baba (supposedly based on a recipe involving use of whole spices and lot of whole red chili, provided by the beefy blimp formerly called Sanjay Dutt) and mutton korma with tandoori roti at Noor Mohammadi. Dessert was some phirni which didn't quite measure up to the best on the street.

swiss cheese rava dosha.

1st attempt: fail! curd did it in the missus feels. did not brown. the dosa stuck to the regular dosa skillet too. did not get swiss cheese holes either.

2nd attempt: fresh batter minus curd in non-stick skillet. added some cooked rice to batter to allow for holes in the crepe.

What are you cooking / having cooked / eating today? [2 of 2] 2012-113

verdict: i don't like to diss food but this tasted nothing like the rava dosas mrs. sundaram used to whip back in the early 80s. obviously we did something wrong (perhaps we should have let the batter sit for a longer time). or, more accurately, i have grown a dislike for semolina as i have aged. i don't like rava idlis, dosas, upma or suji halwas. filled belly with sambar-rice. younger did not like it either. not to be repeated dish.

Nov 25th is "Meatless Day". Oops. Just finished a mindblowing wazwan of gushtaba (meatballs in a subtle, yogurty gravy) and the most authentic rogan josh I've had till date in Mbai. A most satisfying end to a packed weekend. Burp. Sorry Dada Vaswani. Will oblige you some other day, ok?

Haha..no, I discovered it was "Meatless Day" only after getting home from dinner. Busybodies who like to impose their views on what others should eat or not eat do piss me off. So yeah, there was some vengeance in the post but don't cast any political aspersions on my eating. I do it for the love of food and nothing else.

Sir, wazwan is not a dish. It refers to a multi-course feast. It's such blinding ignorance that makes the Kashmiris want to flee to our neighbor's waiting arms.

Bwahaha...this reasoning is even better than than that offered by that buffoon from Palghar who led the mob against that 21-year old girl.

Doc, congratulations! You are now officially eligible to be a shakha pramukh of the Shiv Sena.

But you must now share with us the secret of your amazing insights. Is it centuries of careful inbreeding or just the polluted air and water of Mumbai that turns the cerebrum into mush?

careful inbreeding turns parsi bawas' brains into mush , for they do inbreeding between cousins. we marathis dont do inbreeding .

had lunch at big chill, khan market, new delhi, after visiting humayun's tomb (there are 100 tombs in the complex). awesome food -- felt transported back 30 years to nyc. the items had nothing disconnected about them -- all ingredients gelled to give the perfect taste to the quiche and lasagna.

bacon quiche

bolognese lasagna

What are you cooking / having cooked / eating today? [2 of 2] Imag0412

tuna melt and pepporoni, cheese sandwich

the only disappointment was the pink floyd noise the cafe played in the background -- the decor them was 70s rock and roll.

we are staying in a heritage hotel (100+ years old). we've decided to install a showering cubicle like the one this hotel has:

p.s. had japanese food is setz last night (anagram for zest, their earlier name -- some unable-to-copyright issues they had). the food was superb (esp. the tempura) but could not take pics. owing to dim lighting. setz is one of the best multi-cuisine restaurants in town i think.

This site has people from gulf and also from India neighboring muslim countries. Based on your responses and id, I always thought you were from gulf or some neighboring country. Do you work in India or are in Gulf/Middle East?

ah, really. i shall appreciate your explaining what that means.

all three look unappetizing; the quiche looks disgusting, like output rather than input. from and to the alimentary canal, that is. the "sandwich" looks like something made by a child playing house. the next time, take your own rolls; that might shame the restaurant into serving better ones.

the pictures you've posted prompt me to make a mental note to never eat in a restaurant in india, esp in delhi, that purports to serve any kind of western food. i already find northindian food uninteresting. that leaves only southern indian food for me.

btw, its "pepperoni," not "pepporoni."

why, thank you JM -- i was missing you. have i told you before that you live perpendicular to reality? it is amazing you still live. i think, in a humbling way, what that teaches us -- contrary to perception -- that the world is a haven for ALL sorts.

the missus has made acquaintance with an old, affectionate virus. we need to chart our way back home i think. if the virus permits, we will visit hauz khas village tomorrow. in any case, i will stop blogging for now.

was trying to decide where to go out to eat when in suddenly occurred to me that i could indulge myself in some culinary experiments that would normally be verboten. since the less adventurous have left me alone for the holiday season, i have just made some kale-tomato dal. drinking some beer while it rests on the stove. hope it tastes as good as it looks.

I just made 'Aaloo Paratha' and it goes well with fresh coconut chutney (spicy). Thinking whether I should have 1 more(already ate 2) while watching 'Sholay'.

never tried mackerel (don't get it in bengal). i would love it for the site describes it as having a meaty texture (quite like ilish and tuna i'd suppose). enjoy your lunch!

yeah, murukkulu/karappusa in telugu. tried a couple of different sizes.

I bought a small pack at an Indian store, one of those home made ones in a zip lock bag, and it was so nasty, I couldn't believe it. I didn't know they could ruin something so simple, and thought I could do better. So whipped out my murukku press that I bought a few years ago, but never used, and made these.
