Immigration reform: will it finally get done?
What do you think of the new immigration reform proposals? Do you think it will get done this time round? I think this is a problem that Congress and Obama can't kick down the road any more. Both parties have strong reasons to tackle this problem this year. The Dems can't go back to Latino voters and ask for support if they don't do their very best to pass this now. And the GOP can't face Latino voters if they oppose it now. Given the margins by which they voted for Obama, Latino voters have certainly created a strong political motivation for change. But will the fringe elements of the GOP let this deal go through? I am not sure.

Re: Immigration reform: will it finally get done?
I have not paid close attention to specific Immigration Reform proposals- just know something in general.
This country is a country of immigrants..and I did not have to struggle for my path to citizenship, it was given on a platter to me by my parents..who came as legal immigrants to this country many decades ago..so, I try to be sensitive towards people who come here legally/illegally for the same better opportunities for them and their children (as they see them). *With some realities- have seen people who are "illegal" get into accidents with no auto insurance, driver's license and that can create problems- same with medical insurance..if they are ill/accidents they do overload the system- with no way to pay bills.
*Knowing this President's track record..he has been able to do a lot of things, which were seen as (at least I saw them) as impossible in my lifetime.. a few examples: an AA President elected twice with universal popularity, passed historic Health Care Reform..so will not bet against him in this too. Am sure we all know a few people like him..no matter how down they seem..they somehow seem to bounce back and to do the impossible with unexpected support of the most unexpected people at the right time (call it Divine intervention, pure luck and coincidence whatever!) He is one of them.
*Immigration Reform seems to have remarkable bipartisan political support at this time (the Republicans are beginning to see the new realities about the voter groups- growing Hispanic, Asian and other voter blocks and their rising power) so that will be helpful.
*Like the Health Care System- which was at the brink and something had to be done (*with all the challenges/imperfections), think that there will be Immigration Reform- after some fights, compromises and amended proposals.

Whichever way you slice it, if this passes, it will be amnesty.

If it is, it is. It's not that GOP leaders don't know what you know. They are still trying to get this done because they recognize that "no amnesty" fanaticism will hurt them in future elections.

Yes. As Maria said, we already got Obamacare from just hope and change. Next up: CIR.Hellsangel wrote:Yep. Hope and change.panini press wrote:I don't know if it will. Who had the majority in the House when Obamacare was passed?

People who wanted healthcare reform. We may have a majority of people who want immigration reform in the House now. Or may not. We will find out in a couple of months.Hellsangel wrote:panini press wrote:Yes. As Maria said, we already got Obamacare from just hope and change. Next up: CIR.Hellsangel wrote:Yep. The House passed the bill with a vote of 219 to 212 on March 21, 2010,
with 34 Democrats and all 178 Republicans voting against it.

I continue to learn the importance of the number game and what vote bank politics it can bring (in ANY country).
One doesn't have to be right or legal to change a country's opinion. Both DEMs and GOP want that chunk of vote and are taking steps to bring in comprehensive immigration reforms.
In India the same (number/vote game) got a movie banned yesterday.

Let us see if all Republicans vote against immigration reform this time.Hellsangel wrote:panini press wrote:People who wanted healthcare reform. 1986. Illegals were given amnesty in USA.
2013. There are millions more illegals in USA and illegals numbers are soaring.
H1-B, B4, F1 and many more are there for a reason. Non-americans need to respect USA's laws and rights. Sadly both DEMs and GOP are bringing CIR just for the votes.

Re: Immigration reform: will it finally get done?
There is plenty of HOPE when it comes to Immigration Reform..and changes are coming soon. Was just reading that the President's popularity is rising fast- that will help quite a lot with political clout and getting it done.
*On a different note..thought you may find this interesting. If true..this is not good. I guess people are so distracted by unimportant stuff- into commercialism and materialism..they are not paying attention to what's really important and going on..

If popularity were the measure of how much a President can get done, then GWB bucked the trend very well.

*It is always about the messenger and the message.
When I say popularity- I am including popular support of the *issues and that must connect with the average person/voter.
Bush convinced an entire nation about going to war with Iraq- when his popularity was soaring after Sept 11.

Popular support would depend on whether you read WSJ or NYTimes and similarly if you watch Fox News or MSNBC.

Republicans are the US equivalent of the Indian ADMK. like sheep they have no independent view and blindly vote by party line on EVERY issue. As long as I have known, they have never significantly split their votes on any issue - except in case of respect to departed souls.
So the republicans opposing democratic initiatives is no surprise. So a bill passed is a bill passed. Republicans understand only one thing. Shoving down their throats. Hopefully, the democrats vote for Gun laws and shove it down the Kochsuckers throats.
