for those looking for similarities in the two musical genres, this might be an interesting tidbit. the alap, jod, jhala structure of an instrumental hindustani piece is broadly similar to the ragam, thanam, pallavi. the alap is free form like the raga portion of the RTP, the pulsatile jod is similar to the free form but pulsatile thanam etc.
