Govt. should not fund religion

It's ideal if govt. stays out of funding for religious activities (or managing religious institutions) altogether - be it temples or mutts, or Haj travel, or land grants for temples, masjids, churches, and so on. However, there should be independent auditing (by reputable auditing firms, but not govt) of religious institutions' intake and outlays to prevent corruption.

A truly secular country has no business funding various religious groups and their pilgrimages from taxpayers' money. Then there will be no need for spending more of that money to audit and prevent corruption.

I agree. Government has no business interfering in religion, and religion has no role in government.

Generally, non-religion related outfits file tax returns, and those returns can be audited. However, religious organizations are generally tax-exempt, and that in theory should allow for transperent financial dealings. But it could also provide a nice loophole for hiding money (or using religion as a front for non-religious or business purposes) by pseudo-religious groups. That is the reason for the suggested audit requirement across the board.goodcitizn wrote:A truly secular country has no business funding various religious groups and their pilgrimages from taxpayers' money. The whole business of tax-free status for religious organizations is a big scam -- both in the US and in India. Why should religious organizations be tax-exempt? They should pay taxes like any other business.

I agree- religious Insts/Orgs must be taxed like all businesses, and no need to fund any religious entity or effort.
