Considering that the salaries for priests at temples are small (300 rupees per month?), these students should be commended for their interest. Hopefully, A Raja, Kanimozhi, Stalin, Azagiri and the Marans don't become priests! They will magically generate black money while reciting mantras! It would, however, be interesting to see DKheads reciting the suktas at temples. LOL

Unkil, nobody becomes a priest today for the piddly salary the government pays them.
They do so for a chance to dip their beaks into the cash collections from gullible devotees, before the biggest vulture, the government itself, swoops down and pockets it all.

That perhaps happens in temples with revenue from visitors, tourists, etc. Most temples are small and only some locals visit them. They probably don't leave any money for the priests to swindle. The priest in my village is an old man who is poor and has no other income (other than when he goes for shraaddhas, vratas, etc.). He also goes from door to door collecting rice and vegetables for his daily meals.

You need to update priest manual.
They make more money being an enterpreneurial priests. marriage, death ceremonies, yad yada yada... you need to book them 5 to 6 months in advance. remember those things also call for priests from subcastes, and they make anywhere from 10 to 15K for 2 days for a marriage (minimum).

That is in towns and cities. Village priests haven't changed much. I have seen Hyderabad priests behaving like what you describe.
