Here's my "easy to train" method of housebreaking a puppy purely from experience. Decide on an area outside your house (we used a patch of lawn in our backyard) where you want the puppy to do her thing. When you bring the puppy home, the first thing you do is to leave it there for a few minutes. It will smell it, look around to get used to the surrounding, tinkle or whatever. And each time, at least initially the first week, take the puppy to the same spot when it wakes up from sleep and when it finishes drinking milk or eating dog food. Puppies always urinate right after they wake up and after food. Once they understand the routine and can smell their territorial marking outside, they'll wait to go outdoors. If there is an accident indoors, make sure you clean the area thoroughly and use pinesol or some cleaner that completely removes the odor; otherwise that spot would trigger another mishap because of the leftover scent. All family members should be involved in this training. HTH.

we have been reading up a lot of stuff and the experts seem fairly consistent about all this and agree with you. neighbors who have dogs have also said the exact same thing you have said above. that is what we are going to try and do.

Experience is the best teacher. Another tidbit is about feeding. Fill the dish with milk or food a little at a time so the puppy licks the dish and wants more. And remove the dish off the floor once it is done. Puppies feed better when the food is not constantly in their sight or have access to; otherwise they lose interest and the food gets stale. Don't leave the water dish also on the floor initially. If it drinks often, it will urinate often. Just give it every two hours and take it out immediately.

Puppies are cute and kids love holding them and carrying them around. But that can also create problems since the puppy will want to be held more and more, and cry at nights. Let it learn to sleep on its own bed on the floor, not on the sofa or the kid's bed. Having a cage as a reclusive haven is advisable so it goes in there to have privacy and R&R. Dogs like their own cage especially when you have guests etc.
