off the wrong foot
before dale steyn, before makaya ntini, and before shaun pollock, south africa had mike procter. i had only heard of him through an uncle who was a student at the time studying in the UK and got to watch a lot of county cricket. his specialty was bowling off the wrong foot. finally i found him on youtube. he was one of a generation of cricketers who missed out because of apartheid. some of them like basil d'olieveira emigrated, but he did not.

Re: off the wrong foot
also listened to this on the radio. the famous gavaskar-lillee incident happened during the second innings. india very nearly lost this match because gavaskar (also captain) was ready to walk off with his partner chauhan after lillee called him a c**t. earlier in the test match vishy scored a fantastic hundred. in the end india won. india won so few in that era, this one is etched in my memory.
vishy's innings:
the lillee-gavaskar dustup:
it also required this performance to finally win that match:

There was constant comparison between Barry Richards, Gavaskar and Glen Turner of NZ as to who was the best opening batsman.
That SA team was bullet proof with Richards, Graham Pollack, Peter pollack, Proctor.
Lawry's Aussie team went to SA after their 3-1 (or 4-1) win over Indian in India. The SA team pummeled the Aussies 4-0 (I think) and the Aussies could hardly take more than a few SA wickets each time. That was the last they played.
I think D'Olivera left in the mid 6s before Apartheid kicked in.

Re: off the wrong foot
the greatest bowling performance by an indian bowler ever. i have only seen the youtube clips. this happens to be in the era when i had stopped following cricket for a while simply because it was difficult to keep up with the game due to lack of coverage in the US.
pakistanis think there was generous assistance from the umpire.

My father, uncles, older cousins and (late) grandfather were always supporters of Indian cricket. Even today, my dad takes it personally when India loses. They would support any opposition of the Springboks/Proteas. But even their eyes used to glaze over when they used to talk about Barry Richards. He was perhaps the closest SA might have come to having their own Tendulkar.

Nice collection Max. Kapil Dev still is #1 for his effort, application, dedication and what great action.
The yearly fire-flies of bowlers India gets are there for 3~4 years of making money.
