Masterful work - excellent 'sidelines' conversation between Obama and Putin leading to tangible diplomatic fruits. I liked the invocation of 'exceptionalism', a deliberate ploy by Obama to take a dig at that Conservative principle, giving it as a 'sacrifice' and the subsequent 'piece capture' by the Russian grandmaster.

you give putin way too much credit. he is just an opportunist and this has given assad a get of jail card. there is just no way to verify anything.

If the deal goes south, Obama would garner some level public support for limited strikes. Americans love loud messages especially when they are messed with. Assad just won a reprieve from death row, he is not out of 'regime-change' row, yet.

As far as I am concerned Assad blinked and that has to be a good start.

This is a situation with no good outcome. Even with bombing, there is no making sure that all the chemical weapons are destroyed. And with the already volatile situation exacerbated by bombing, some of those chemical weapons could easily fall into Al Qaeda hands. So if we can get most of those chemical weapons out of Assad's control without firing a shot, I would consider that a plus.
