i haven't read the article but it reminded me of something.

sometime back, i attended an award ceremony for a math olympiad sort of competition. they had two age groups, 7-10 and 10-14 or so. all those who got distinctions were presented with a certificate. among the 7-10 age group, the distribution between girls and boys was about 50%. there were as many girls going up the stage as boys. in the older age group, i counted exactly 3 girls out of the 40 distinctions. it struck me rather odd and am not sure why that was the case.

What aren't that many female international and grandmasters in Chess?

If they figure that out, they can solve the girls in science problem.
