woww... this guy - a Tambrahmi Iyer - was so progressive and simply amazing. He got his first daughter remarried, and scores of issues he fought were astounding...simply...

Founders!

Two Rangacharis and two Pantulu (Kesava Rao and Subba Rao) actually started The Hindu. Tambrams and Gultbrams.

Subrahmania Iyer was the intellectual behind.

Ananda Gajapati (from your ancestral home) funded money for the "National Press" on Mount Road.

To my surprise I found a few more likely "connections" to MY ancestors. There is a very good chance that this Subramania Iyer could have known my great grandfather and/or great great grandfather. Who knows... So...it looks like The Hindu became a "ruling party" Jalra only after Kasturi Iyengar (of course, from Coimbatore) took over The Hindu. No wonder N Ram and The Hindu are still a Jalras of the Congress.

Left Leaning???? Here:
**************
He is referred to as a left-wing editor and known to believe in left/communist ideology.[3][4]

Ram was born on May 4, 1945 in Madras, British India. He was the eldest son of G. Narasimhan who served as Managing-Director of The Hindu from 1959 to 1977. Ram is a great-grandson of S. Kasturi Ranga Iyengar, the patriarch of the Kasturi family.

Ram graduated from Loyola College,[5] Chennai, with a bachelor's degree in arts in 1964, received a master's degree from Presidency College, Chennai, in 1966, and later an M.S. in comparative journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.[6] He actively participated in the students politics. He was vice-president of the Students Federation of India (SFI), which is politically linked to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), at the time of its formation in 1970 in Thiruvananthapuram.[7]

**************

This guy IS a commie and like any commie he is committed to sucking up to CONmen. Of course, he is a bigot himself marrying a super-white whitie and living and hobnobbing with only the Elite. Hey sitting from there, one can easily pontificate on communism and against communalism

N. Ram did some really investigative work on bofors.
Siddarth varafarajan did some good work on nuclear deal between India and Usa.
Hindu did some good work on 2g and coal scam.
Current changes including pushing out siddarth may mean a return to non investigative style.

Subramania Iyer campaigned vehemently for reforms in Hindu society. He supported widow remarriage and desired to abolish untouchability and child marriages. Subramania Iyer arranged for the remarriage of his eldest daughter, Sivapriyammal, who had been widowed at the age of 13, to a boy in Bombay during the 1889 Congress session

>>>>Interesting. It was Tamil Brahmins like this man and Subramania Bharathi who revolted against oppression of widows.

In a way, we should thank the Britishers who allowed free press and debate among Hindus. They might have put in prisons the Indians who wrote articles criticizing their presence in the subcontinent but unlike the mughals, they did not kill them.

In THOSE days people married very young. My grandmother married at 15 and my mother once said her friends grandmother was 4 and she peed in the car. Muslims still marry girls 5 to 10 years and they even opposed setting a minimum marriage age for their women.

Boy is a generic term that referred to all grooms even now. Haven't you heard Crystal harried refer to her 85+ old man as her BOYFRIEND?
