Do the casteist and sexist campaigns to win votes serve the real interest of country and parliamentary democracy?
Consider a couple of newsmakers recently: (1) “To reserve its votes, Congress plans private sector quota” (Jan. 21,2014: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/To-reserve-its-votes-Congress-plans-private-sector-quota/articleshow/29159369.cms), and (2) “Rahul says quota for women is top priority” (Jan. 21, 2014: http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/rahul-says-quota-for-women-is-top-priority/article5598933.ece).
In the first case (1), extending the caste based quotas and reservations in education and jobs in the private sector will not only be detrimental to the efficiency, professionalism and spirit of competition in the private educational institutions (schools and colleges) and the jobs in the private sector, but it will also further promote and prolong the caste system and casteism in society with Govt’s blessings as the Govt. introduces the use of caste (through caste based quotas / reservations) in private educational institutions and privately owned businesses and industries. Needless to say, the introduction of quotas / reservations in the private sector is not good at all.
Moreover, in the second case (2), the interest of women in India will be better served immediately and on long term basis if they achieve equality with men in front of the law through a prompt implementation of UCC (Uniform Civil Code: one law for everyone, irrespective of gender, religion, caste and race), instead of politicians and Govt. trying to introduce the sex (gender) based quotas / reservations in education and jobs for women. The best help to women in terms of improving their lot is therefore in the implementation of UCC immediately.

Re: Do the casteist and sexist campaigns to win votes serve the real interest of country and parliamentary democracy?
Politicians want women to believe that they are helpless without Govt’s help and their condition can be improved only through quotas and reservations in education and jobs, but that is mostly the vote bank politics for women’s votes in the elections.
In reality, women for their overall well-being, everywhere and in all segments of society in India need urgently the implementation of UCC so that they legally enjoy the same rights which men do currently. Unfortunately, that is not the case at present for women (rights equal with men) without the UCC. Therefore, the promise of quotas for women is just window-dressing.
