Why Actor Saif Ali Khan Could Lose Padma Shri Award

Actor Saif Ali Khan should be stripped of the Padma Award given to him in 2010, says a petition which is reportedly being examined by the union government.

SC Agrawal, an activist, filed a complaint with the Union Home Ministry in March, saying that Mr Khan, 43, should not be allowed to retain the award- conferred by President Pratibha Patil on him for his contribution as an artist-because a Mumbai court has charged him with assaulting an Indian businessman from South Africa at the five-star Taj Hotel in Colaba, Mumbai in 2012.

Mr Agrawal says the Home Ministry has told him that it is examining his petition. .....

I think he is now eminently qualified to enter politics.

If physical violence against another human is grounds for disqualification, then he shouldn't have been given the award in the first place. Because he was involved in such a case years before he was given the Padma Shri. Back in the 90s he went and beat up Ashok Row Kavi, a gay author/artist/whatever because of some derogatory comment he made on TV about his mother Sharmila Tagore. In that same TV show, Ashok Row Kavi called Gandhi a "bastard bania".

He probably won't lose the award. There might not be a pre-requisite and the guidelines that the recipient of this or similar other awards can't engage in personal duels and physical fights.
