Cleaning Ganga will take 18 years, massive investment, Centre tells Supreme Court Empty Cleaning Ganga will take 18 years, massive investment, Centre tells Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: After being rapped by the Supreme Court for its approach to clean Ganga, the Narendra Modi government has placed before it a blueprint of short, medium and long term measures that spread over 18 years and thousands of crore of investment to restore the glory of the holy river.

The NDA government submitted that it has identified 118 towns situated on bank of Ganga as a first target to achieve total sanitation including water waste treatment and solid waste management......

>>> I think they have already spent more time and money talking about and planning the Ganga cleaning. It is time to launch the actual project immediately.

I think they should teach all bhaiyyas on how not to do their business the BIMARU way and all monomaniacs to treat the effluent from their leather industry. Then, Ganga will start smiling again.

They should start commercializing barge and ship movement along the middle of the river. They can follow the Build-operate-transfer method. Much of the muck is along the shores, and the govt can use the money generated to clean the shores.

This is an impossible task.
try googling the most polluted lake in us.
Onondaga lake cleaning was demanded for 4 or 5 decades. finally they started some work in 1990s. most complex part just started in 2012.
cleaning up ganga will take decades and several billions. as govt change it will defended several times.
But good that they are embarking on it.

a project - actually, a program - of this magnitude and impact should be prioritized, planned and scheduled; the government is right in making short, medium, and long-term plans. and they are right in focusing on the 118 towns, because most of the pollution is caused by towns discharging their sewage and industrial waste, and dumping their trash, in the ganga. every town that is made or helped to properly manage its waste mitigates the problem, even if it doesn't cure it. identifying the maximum-impact towns was necessary.

The danger is that nothing might change even now, because the identification of the polluting towns on the banks of Ganga and its tributaries had already been carried decades ago and nothing of real significance in terms of remedial policies and actions introduced so far.

okay, you have a point, but narenbhai has shown strong signs that he intends to follow through; there's a budget allocation for it, a ministry for it, and experts advising the government on it. most importantly, narenbhai has a vision of a prosperous and pleasant india, and seems to want nothing other than to fulfill that vision. i am optimistic.
