Blocking porn sites would cause greater harm, Centre tells Supreme Court
I did not understand this statement.
Appearing before a bench headed by Justice BS Chauhan, additional solicitor general KV Vishwanathan submitted that blocking all such websites would cause greater harm. "Everything would be blocked and even good literature would be blocked and it would cause more greater harm," he said.
What good literature on porn sites is KV Viswanathan talking about? Is this the same good literature followed by ND Tiwari, Singhvi, Digvijay Singh and by all MPs, MLAs during parliament session?

For a change, GoI is arguing for free speech. And that's a good thing.

Nonsense! BS
Free speech? Does he refer to good literature on porn sites as free speech?
If GoI wants to implement free speech then they should start from Doordarshan.
i.e. Report everything opposition leaders speak in rallies.

You may not like the content on some websites, and you are free to stay away from those sites. Nobody forces you to visit sites that you don't like to visit. Allowing the government to censor those sites because you don't like them is a bad, bad idea.southindian wrote:Nonsense! BS

Who's the govt or the courts to decide what the citizens need to watch or not watch? Why block anything? It's the headache of the parents of young children, not of the govt or the courts.
Same with sex toys. I believe they are banned in india. Ridic! It's a mulitibillion dollar industry in the world.

Your reference to "Free speech" was bad, because GoI has no intention for making this a free speech issue. GoI is blocking free speech on Doordarshan, so your assumption for GoI is wrong.Idéfix wrote:You may not like the content on some websites, and you are free to stay away from those sites. I was looking for the relevance of "Keeping these sites unblocked so Good-Literature-On-Porn-Sites is available".
Appearing before a bench headed by Justice BS Chauhan, additional solicitor general KV Vishwanathan submitted that blocking all such websites would cause greater harm. "Everything would be blocked and even good literature would be blocked and it would cause more greater harm," he said.
Anyone has a clue what that means.

In 2014, what is good literature on porn sites that when blocked would cause more greater harm?

I'm not sure it is so simple. porn vulgarizes sex and women. I think it is harmful to society. In a country like india where the consumption of porn must be high I suspect it probably contributes to the crimes against women that we read about. Unfortunately these have not been small crimes. my mind is not made up on the matter but I think what we need to do is make sex education available to everyone and also portray sex in mainstream television as a normal natural and healthy act like every single day so people get over it and not treat it as something shameful. I think in a place like india it may be useful to limit porn while taking my recc as delineated above.Idéfix wrote:For a change, GoI is arguing for free speech. And that's a good thing.

the freedom of speech argument aside, i think there is an important biological reason why porn is harmful -- it deadens men's libidos and sets up unrealistic expectations and imagery. i don't know why this is seldom discussed.

in japan porn is more freely available than elsewhere and in fact it is possible to obtain porn through vending machines (i am not sure what kind of check they have in place to prevent children from accessing porn). the rationale given is that free access to porn reduces incidents of rapes and molestations.

yes and young japanese men and women have a high level of sexual dysfunction, to the point that many of them have given up on actual sex.

This makes perfect sense... here is why...
I am sure your workplace has rules and even filtering/blocking software. Please do try to google "Vagina", Breast cancer, Penis, or other medical terms. and then click some of the sites.
Watch the filter act idiotically blocking even legit information sites.
