What do you think of the US becoming bilingual? Do you think children in the US should be encouraged to learn both Spanish and English?

i think it's in everyone's interest to learn the languages that best serve their economic interests. right now that's english and mandarin.
the lingua franca in some workspaces that i inhabit is mandarin.

The world, or in this case the country doesn't revolve around you or your workspaces does it, Il Professore? How far do you think Mandarin will take you in L.A or Austin? Or even East Boston for that matter? The fact of the matter is that Spanish is the second largest spoken language of the United States.in fact there is territory vying for statehood whose official language is Spanish.

it does not. which is why i said people should individually do what's in their best interest. i have no use for spanish right now. learning mandarin could really help me. so right now if i had the time and the motivation, i'd learn mandarin over any other language.
