I think 2008 was the last time I had used a travel agent to purchase tickets. I don't think there is any advantage of going through them these days, what we see online is pretty much the same software used by them.

Need to buy during the peak time. Prices double or even triple during that period.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I've been using a travel agent. Finding a good one is important.

Online is better if you're very sure of dates. If you think your plans return date might change, travel agents are better.

For peak season, travel agents seem to have better prices, additional availability not showing up in websites, connection options, good bundles for hub to spoke connectivity (in case source/destination is not directly located at any of the Hubs with international airports)

Off peak season, the best website I saw was Vayama.com, (Kayak gave me inferior results) and surprisingly Priceline.com.

Priceline typically gives low prices, but poor connections(longer wait time at intermediate stops) and uses lots of code share. Code share does not work well for, through boarding, meal preferences, and has complicated rules for luggage limits. So, google Priceline, find the best price possible, then try to see if you can book such an option by directly contacting the airlines/airlines website OR travel agent. More often than not, by default, travel agents do not seem to suggest the options that Priceline gives. They would suggest something at certain price point, but when confronted with lower price seen in Priceline, they would then accept the new route suggested and book that route, but with better connections than what Priceline suggests.

One issue I find in all tickets, is that the cancellation/postponement rules are opaque. Most of them do not print the rules in the e-tickets/tickets they issue, and show us the rules, for us to understand, just before booking, and somehow we are expected to remember or take print outs immediately.

I called a travel agent for the cheapest ticket. I ended up searching for him and came up with lower fares. I tried 3 others and the number of conditions and constraints I placed exasperated them and they all gave up. Travel agents make more on business tickets and corporate clients. The cattle class tickets - that too stingy desi travelers - are not worth their time.
