Making a strong pitch for religious tolerance, US President Barack Obama on Tuesday said every person has the right to practice his faith without any persecution and that India will succeed so long it is not “splintered” on religious lines.

“Every person has the right to practice his faith without any persecution, fear or discrimination. India will succeed so long it is not splintered on religious lines,” Obama told the audience comprising mainly young people.

The President’s comments came against the backdrop of the controversy over religious conversions and ‘Ghar Wapsi” programmes by right wing Hindu outfits in India.

Obama also cited Article 25 of the Indian Constitution dealing with Freedom of religion

“Your (Constitution) Article 25 says all people are equally entitled to the freedon of consience and have right to freely profess and practise and propagate religion. In both our countries, in all countries upholding with freedom of religion is the utmost responsibility of the government but also the responsibility of every person,” he said.

Obama also said that around the world we have seen intolerancce, violence and terror perpetrated by those who profess to be standing for upholding their faith

“We have to guard against any efforts to divide us on sectarian lines or any other thing,” he said.

Looks like you missed the real intent of what he said.

He was asking CONmen, Laloo, Nitish, Mulayam, Maya, Mamata, K'nidhi, Jagan, etc., to stop petty, sikular, caste and religion based politics and concentrate on ideas that bring about "sabkaa vikaas".

If a gang of Indian politicians go to an American president and complains about India and her people, the American president won't have respect for them. He will wonder how politicians can complain in this fashion to an outsider. He will question their patriotism. Republican or democrat, American politicians are proud and patriotic people. CONartists and traitors won't impress patriotic Americans.

The BBC newscaster during the evening news yesterday asked a guest from America whether the U.S. Pres. Obama should have been seen as so very close during the Republic Day parade to the Indian P.M. Modi, a Hindu nationalist (according to the BBC newscaster).

Are Hindu nationalists less tolerant of others than, say, the Muslim nationalists or Christian nationalists who are known to make use of the derogatory terms to describe others as infidel, kafir or evil and sometimes even wage wars against others for not letting them proselytize and convert?

He must be having the iSlamis - the World's foremost killers - in mind when he said that...

Oh wait.. he did not say that in Saudi....that means the saudis should be the exemplary model for "secularism".. Agree it is the hindu terrorists that he was aiming at.

Yeah, right! In MSG and Australia, Modi was addressing Americans and Australians and asking them to treat their women properly, to bring about changes in society, etc., etc. I am sure, extremely brilliant scholars like Pappu think like that.

Obama might actually be addressing the evangelical gownwallahs from the US who spoil the investment and business agendas of Uncle Sam in India. Traitors like Jagan who rob people in open day light and profess profound faith in Jesus are also his target.

LOL

He can't... he won't.... he NEVER will...

Obama will change the subject in Saudi, on question of religious equality, women's rights, freedom of speech, freedom of expression.

You know that OIL can do wonders..... just in a day (from New Delhi to Riyadh).

It is nice to see obama filling happiness in the hearts of CD, md and all pseudos (and liberals in USA) to compensate for all of that smooching, hugging, and dealing with that right wing , muslim baiting, capitalist pig modi.  It does not matter that it is the least influential part of his trip.

US has plenty of shyt to clean and the earlier it stops meddling on other countries internal affairs the better it is, now that it is increasingly ranged against Chinkus and Ruskies. US simply cannot afford to antagonize India based on the agenda of its own Christian fanatics and Conversion Criminals.

Western countries also lectured the world about torture and human rights. After 9/11, torture is ok to save lives.
It is easy to preach when you do not have the problem.

Obama's attempt to balance his own doubts about modi and bjp with the objective reality of economic progress is understandable. Who are the audience for that advice? Already left leaning Indians or widely enthusiastic modi followers?

US simply cannot afford to antagonize India based on the agenda of its own Christian fanatics and Conversion Criminals.
May be, but at this moment PM & his cronies are busy acting like high-class prostitutes.

What was the most significant part according to you, watching the parade? Other than that, this trip accomplished zilch; which of course, was not unexpected.
CD

Aern't you the all knowing ultimate expert?  Clinton's visit to India did not mean anything.  Bush's visit is a waste of time.  Now obama's two visits achieved  zilch.  All these politicians just roam around the world to talk about religious persecution of muslims.
Any idiot can say whatever he or she feels. If they can put substance behind their statements, then other normal people can understand what is zilch for them.

The other idiot Rahul also said Modi did not do anything. Does either of you know what needs to be done? and What it takes to get things done?

given comrade's and his kebab buddy's blinders-on selective parsing abilities it is very likely they missed the part about nuclear agreement...they were very focused on what obama has to say about muslims so they should be forgiven
Accusing BJP of "political chicanery" on the matter, former Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari tweeted "BJP said Indo-US Nuclear Deal compromised India's sovereignty. If that is true, why is BJP bending over backwards to operationalize it now?

"former minister" manish tiwari got the same amount of credibility on the topic as you do

Yes, but do have some consideration for others when you launch your 500-word essays of inanity. Your assaults make for a strong argument against the right to free speech.

True, Md. If you give up your ignorant arrogance,  rest of us can talk about normal topics.

But my ignorant arrogance has never slowed or stopped the raft of 500-word essays in inanity from you. So how will my giving it up make any difference?
Okay, here is a very simple question ... are the U.S.A and other western countries persecuting Iran in not letting it make the bomb, while even imposing sanctions against it and threatening it with war if it continues to pursue the nuclear bomb option?

Now, it's in this wider context that President Obama's town hall warning about religious freedom and the need to guard against sectarianism should be viewed. He was speaking as a friend but he was chiding nonetheless. And very publicly!

When he said: "Every person has a right to practice their faith as they choose... nowhere is that more important than in India", he had the ghar wapsi and love jihad campaigns in mind. When he added "India will succeed so long as it's not splintered along lines of religious faith", he was clearly telling Mr Modi that his silence over these matters endangers India's future.

The President unhesitatingly embraced his "sisters and brothers of India" with the words "when we look at each other we see a reflection of ourselves" and when he added "America can be India's best partner", but that affirmation of commitment and affection only makes the warning that followed stronger and more urgent to heed. Ignore it at your peril.

I don't know how Mr Modi will respond. I hope it won't irritate him, even if he doesn't publicly say so. Actually, my fingers are crossed in the hope it gives him the strength to speak out and stand up to those who threaten his development dreams with their own narrow and dark visions. Remember, that includes the RSS and some members of his own government.

Speaking of  human rights in China, of women's right in Saudi Arabia, and warn against terrorism in Pakistan enhances the US president prestige. Those topics do not get voiced in those countries.

India is a free country and it has groups of various shades.  What purpose would it serve if the french president comes to USA and advises the US police to show restraint  when dealing with african american people? French are no reps of African americans and french are not champions of human rights.

US democratic process is working through its racial past remnants while balancing the need to maintain law and order.  American people have to find a way through that.

Indian people are working through how they have to deal with their internal religious divisions. What Obama said was widely known and was said many times by more powerful Indian figures such as Gandhi and Nehru.  He and America have no particular moral high ground on that issue considering the right wing religious groups in USA.  He could have presented the same religious equality ideas as ideas from Indian history or ideas pronounced by Gandhi and others. Him lecturing Indians is unproductive. He does not have the stature to lecture them. He is no Mandela.

Obama would have had more impact if he had spoken to young people with an upbeat message of growth, market economics,  and pushed his religious comments as Gandhi's vision.

Perhaps he could have also spoken on the freedom of religion when he recently visited Saudi Arabia, i.e. not throwing away the scriptural texts etc. of other religions with visitors by the police and other officials (comment in the http://creative.sulekha.com/questions-of-politics_621852_blog)

Obama: "Stop religious persecution: Obama to India"

Did Obama say this on Jan 26th or Jan 27th?

i.e.

Did Obama say this to India when he was in Saudi Arabia?

That would have been hilarious. Smile

It's like talking about freedom of something (religion, for example) with a person who does not believe in that kind of freedom to others (specifically, the freedom or free choice to others to have a religion different from his own).

Who is offended with what Obama said?
It's simply a case that you can't talk about religious freedom with someone to whom religious freedom means, according to his / her religious manifesto (scripture), seeing others as religiously unequal / inferior to him / her and a legitimate target for conversions.
Btw can you talk about the political freedom (including fighting elections in multi-party system) with a political party which believes in, according to its political manifesto, in only one party political system (for itself only) and sees nothing wrong in getting rid (banning) other political parties and stop the free and fair (multiparty) elections once it comes to power?

*ahem* so much for all that hugging and smooching.
One week after the visit, details are slowly emerging about the agreements that were announced between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama after bilateral talks in Delhi. What seems clear is that while the talks were high on optics, and on optimism, there were several differences between India and the U.S. that prevented many deals announced from actually being signed, which is partly why President Obama referred to a “breakthrough understanding,” rather than just a “breakthrough.”

Continuation of intolerance saga
WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama on Thursday said the "acts of intolerance" experienced by religious faiths of all types in India in the past few years would have shocked Mahatma Gandhi.

The comments by Obama came a day after the White House refuted suggestions that the US President's public speech in New Delhi in which he touched upon religious tolerance was a "parting shot" aimed at the ruling BJP.

He was referring to all the bombings and Love Jihad and conversions by padres. After all, Gandhi was against conversion of hindus when he said a muslims should be a good muslim and a hindu should be a good hindu, and opposed all the killings. Now that most of the killings are done by muslim jihadis, Obama was referring to them.

"We are feeling insecure since this new government has come. The government and police haven't given any proper response to these attacks," Father Lawrence, a Catholic priest from south Delhi, told AFP.

"Five churches have been attacked in Delhi in the last two months without any proper response from the PM or any other central minister," he added.

The latest attack occurred on Monday when someone stole ceremonial items from a Catholic church, while another in north Delhi was hit by an arson attack in December.

If this is the fate of minority citizens living in Delhi imagine those living in BJP run states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, MP, Chattisgarh.

I think, CONartists when they met Obama on the last day of his trip to India talked rubbish to minimize any gains that Modi may be getting for India. May be, Sonia and Pappu cried describing how poor the dalit family is where Pappu ate some food and Obama, being a US black, empathized with the plight of the dalit woman.

People of India will not forgive CON desh-drohis.
