U.S. panel wants to assess the state of religious tolerance in India
http://www.thehindu.com/news/international/world/allow-us-to-visit-india-us-panel-on-religious-freedom/article6991274.ece?utm_source=vuukle&utm_medium=referral#commentsThe chair of a high-profile Congressional commission on religious freedom has asked the Indian government to reconsider its view to withhold permission for the commission members to visit the country to assess the state of religious tolerance.
In an interview with The Hindu, Katrina Lantos-Swett, Chairperson of the U.S. Congress-established Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), said, “I would also say that we would really welcome the opportunity to travel to India and we’ve been saddened that until now India has not been yet ready to welcome a USCIRF delegation to come for a visit.”
Under her leadership and Congressional mandate, USCIRF continues to produce an annual report on the state of religious freedom worldwide, which in years past had designated India as a “Tier II” or “watch-list” country.

>>> How is asking whether if other countries are being evaluated by the same yardstick burying one's head in the sand? Why this over eagerness to allow everyone to judge you, while others (including the judgers, for instance on their own foibles) are exempt?confuzzled dude wrote:Why Do We Indians Bury Our Heads in the Sand? sure there's racism everywhere, but not the spectacular headline-making kind like the south. there's a reason people think of the south when they think of racism. you can deny it all you want and it still won't change anything. and i am not about to engage in a cut and paste article links war with you. go live in alabama if you like it so much.

No one denied racism exists in the south. You're just getting defensive. It is just much more hidden in places like Boston even if quite rampant.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:Hellsangel wrote:In case you were unaware, Boston has plenty of racism.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:india should send a committee to study racial tolerance in the american south.

there's racism in small towns in any part of US. There's not much racism in bigger metropolitan cities with a lot of mixed population. I could sense racism in michigan, but not in Atlanta.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:Hellsangel wrote:In case you were unaware, Boston has plenty of racism.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:india should send a committee to study racial tolerance in the american south.

1. US religious freedom comm is a tool for a certain type religious propaganda. Their reports are colored. They do not have a reputation like Amnesty international for unbiased reporting. Denying permission to every hostile and biased voice would make India a control freak.
2. Racism takes generations to become a non issue. It is more than 150 years since civil war. 45 plus years since civil rights laws enacted. we still see wide spread overt and covert racism. It exists in both north and south. But there is a degree of difference between states. North east is relatively more progressive and less prone to racist attitudes. Boston is one of the progressive cities in USA but retains racial strains of the past. Deep south states such as mississippi, alabama, south carolina and louisiana still exhibit few signs of overt racism.
