However, Aryabhatta (incidentally, he was not a UP bhaiyya; he was from the Godavari region), was a smart cookie.

Aryabhata may have been from Godavari region, but he was surely a bachcha compared to the people who composed the Upanishads. Now the people who composed the Upanishads were UP bhaiyas according to modern historians. Vakavaka worships the Upanishads so it is strange that he has contempt for the people who composed the Upanishads.
