Were the police right in arresting the protesters? Did they nip in the bud, a situation like the one that developed in Britain that would have led to riots?

People have right to protest peacefully. Anyways court has ordered that they can come back.

No, it was a dastardly attack on the most important freedom of expression. On the flimsy pretext of protecting public spaces from filth and dirt (which is the essence of democracy), the police, under orders from the evil Emperor Bloomberg, have landed a heavy blow to democracy in the US of A. Time to light up some candles, hold up the banner of free speech and go on a fast. Mahatma Anna has shown the way. Non-cynical change drivers, here's your chance. Be the change you always wanted.

What else did you expect in a near fascist state run by the Wall Street? The 1% does not care about the average American's problems. Democracy? Peaceful protest? That's mostly for preaching to the rest of the world.
