Where are the good old days when Govt. jobs could be acquired on the basis of family, or caste category or personal favor, without the need for getting tested properly? (कहाँ गए बो अच्छे दिन जब बाप-दादा के नाम से, या जाति के नाम पर, या सिर्फ सिफारिश से, बिना कुछ किये और टेस्ट दिए सरकारी नौकरियां मिल जाती थीं?)

Now, there is a proper test to find out the suitability of each candidate (male or female) for the Govt. job. (अब तो हद हो गयी, सरकारी नौकरी देने से पहले नौकरी के हिसाब से असली टेस्ट कर रहें हैं चाहे आदमी हो या औरत)

The process of hiring people into jobs needs to improve and the above is a step in the right direction. I saw a newspaper article a few days ago about a surprise visit by the education inspector to a school in Bihar. When the inspector asked the school's headmaster to translate a very simple Hindi sentence ("मैं विद्यालय जाता हूँ।") into English, the headmaster was unable to translate it (as "I go to school.").

A cement bag weighs 50 kg (slightly more than 100 lbs.) and the employees in this multi-task job are expected to lift and carry that kind of weight whenever necessary.

Naturally, it's better to examine the physical and mental capability / suitability of prospective job applicants, without exception, during the interview and before hiring, rather than employ someone arbitrarily and in a haste and then find out later (especially, when required suddenly) that he / she is mentally unwilling or physically unable to perform the task.

A good example on the right attitude and willingness on the part of a prospective employee in looking for a job: in the great Hollywood movie "The Best Years of Our Loves", unemployed (WWII returned) U.S. Air Force pilot Captain Fred Derry (played by Dana Andrews) tries for a job as junkman while visiting a military aircraft junk yard --

Correction: A lower weight cement bag (25 kg) lifted / carried over 50m by women than men (50 kg) in the test for multi-task Govt. job in Himachal:

"..the multitask workers being recruited in the Public Works Department (H.P.), men are being driven 50 meters by lifting a 50 kg cement sack, while the scale has been set for women to cover the same distance by lifting a 25 kg cement sack..."
