just one point: the student was beaten up for not speaking in english. so please do not blame hindi for the thrashing the student received.

Yes. the students should be following the rules of the educational institutes where they are studying. otherwise they have the choice of not being at that educational institute. of course, i am opposed to any kind of physical punishment.

Good. Hope the principal gets convicted, and doesn't get to walk out by paying a bribe.

MAX also should be asked for his opinion. Bcz here is a PUBLIC school that emphasizes inglees and not a local language. A trend that I said was found everywhere - and more so in TN.

Now, I strongly suggest a caste angle in this case and slap a caste discrimination case on the Princi.

In India the so called "PUBLIC" schools are private schools (the famous Doon Schhol is an example). This tradition of calling private schools as public schools is a hand-me-down of India's erstwhile masters (for example, Harrow and Eton are referred to as public schools, when they are very exclusive private schools).

the Doon school may be an exception

but a public school in India is that which is run by the government or the state/city municipality .there are no fees , milk is fed to all the kids at lunch and they have a uniform .

wish more kids would attend such schools ..

indo is right. public school in the british and indian context = exclusive private school. for example hyderabad public school and delhi public school are actually private.

this sounds like overreach by the teacher. what's the big deal? i went to an english medium school but we used to talk in tamil all the time, and nobody said anything. and it's a certainty that any of my classmates can take on any of these kids after they become adults in english writing and speaking, if the email messages that i get from young people from india every now and then filled with "ur group" and "ur lab" is any indication! they think SMS texting is the same as writing!
