Mishra, his voice no longer so soft, the tone uneven, tells me that “mimicking the West in the latter half of the 20th century has resulted in utter disaster”. “These huge agrarian economies, like India and China,” I can almost hear his head shake in dismay, “trying to industrialise, scrambling for resources, colonising their own land and people, it will end in catastrophe. Imagine the environmental consequences. The Western economic model worked for these small, settler societies. The idea of endless growth, endless expansion is fine when there are empty continents to conquer.”
