India to force tech companies to manufacture locally? Empty India to force tech companies to manufacture locally?

India's electronics imports are a big contributor to its widening trade gap. Many of those products are made in China and sold by American firms in India. It looks like the government is contemplating moves to force those companies to manufacture locally, not unlike what China has done in the past (and continues to do with its government procurement). I am not sure where this one will end up, but this has the potential to become a really hot topic really quickly.

India has proposed sweeping curbs on the import of technology products ranging from laptops to Wi-Fi devices to computer-network equipment.

The proposed regulations, which were reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, would create an expansive "Buy India" mandate requiring a large percentage of the high-tech goods sold in the country to be manufactured locally.
