Trivia question Empty Trivia question

Post by Idéfix Tue Jan 22, 2013 3:00 am

In Indian elections, candidates have to file their papers along with a token deposit amount. If a candidate polls below a certain (rather low) threshold of valid votes in the election, (s)he is said to lose that deposit. Losing one's deposit in this manner is considered the ultimate defeat in Indian politics. What is the threshold level of vote below which one loses the deposit?

Googling welcome.

A defeated candidate who fails to secure more than one sixth of the valid votes polled in the constituency will lose his security deposit.

good question.

I thought sometime ago the law was changed and all except the top 3 will lose their deposit. Will read the link.

I voted only once - of course the party lost. Next time when i went, did not realize that my vote was already outsourced and efficiently exercised.

Thanks, wanted to post something for the times, given all the frenetic polling here.
