Silver Linings Playbook
I wanted to post a mini-review of this movie in the Mainhouse..because, to me, this movie has elements of a documentary and it's an important movie- to raise awareness about Mental Health/Challenges-Illness..and imo. does help to remove stigmas- is also "filmy" very entertaining- very funny and poignant!
It does not evoke pity or sympathy..just a well-made movie and hits the right notes.
*Jennifer Lawrence has a radiant presence and lights up the screen and is utterly charming..like her a lot, and Bradley Cooper is good. Robert DeNiro is Robert DeNiro:)
Not sure if it will win any Oscars..but, will recommend this moive to anyone who has loved ones who is dealing with mental health challenges (mood swings, depression, non-compliance of treatment etc). Even if you don't..it makes you think about "Silver Linings"...
*4 stars/5- from me.

Amen to that...great movie - very white way of dealing with issues. A bit troubled about the general message that if one is a bit crazy you need someone equally crazy and both of them self-aware to make music.

Was wondering who the Indian actor who portrayed Dr. Patel in this movie (know quite a few real Dr. Patels!) thought he was good.
Never heard of him before..and looked him up- Anupam Kher..apparently he has starred in 450 films!

I think it was the first time..I've seen any couple who kinda-sorta admitted they are both crazy and do it with humor! Am sure- that is relatable to most people:)
Speaking of relatable..perhaps it is relatable and easier to have some empathy for others who are going through the same struggles. I like the family-friends coming together..think that can make a huge difference.

You, ma'am are a tease! Just kidding...that is so true and would be so funny if it was not so tragic. Such is the bane of human condition....

A thing about Anupam Kher. He can act if he gets a director who can control him. He was very good in Saaransh, Daddy and more recently in A Wednesday.

Have not met anyone who disliked it, but there is always a first time for everything.
Am actually surprised so many people (those I thought would not care for it) really liked it- quite pleasantly surprised.

I liked this movie. I thought Jennifer Lawrence did a great job. For a romantic comedy, it was off the beaten track.

Carvaka,
Nice to know you liked it- and surprised that quite a few here have seen it.
May I ask..what made you interested in this movie? For some reason can't seem to see you- rush to watch romantic comedies, my bad:)

Yeah, you can bet it was not my choice. Sometimes a man has to do what he does not want to do. It was part of a package deal that involved Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty and the Hobbit.Maria S wrote:panini press wrote:I liked this movie. I thought Jennifer Lawrence did a great job. Re: Silver Linings Playbook
Three things I like to observe when I go to see a movie (in the US).
1.The crowd (large or small) age, gender, Yes- race - *since I mostly go to the movies in the South, unless I am traveling.
2.The movements in the theater- how many people are restless walking up and down- getting popcorn, drinks etc. during the movie.
3. How long they stay in their seats after the movie is over (wait for the credits to roll, are they rushing out- can't wait to get out).
My observations when I went to see this movie:
1. The theater was full (which was surprising)..with a good mix of age groups- 20 + to perhaps 70+..mostly men, white.
2. It was total silence, no movement- except for some laughter- hardly any movements.
3. Rare applause at the end of the movie (rare for movies in the US- I can think of only few movies like Titanic), and people waited patiently for the credits to roll and then leave the theater.
Since I watched the movie..have heard from mostly men who seem to like this movie (not just for Jennifer Lawrence!)..many who suffer from illnesses themselves and have family members themselves-seems to touch something..no different from Patrick Kennedy, who is Bipolar (and involved in Mental Health Awareness efforts):
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/01/20/former-congressman-patrick-j-kennedy-reviews-silver-linings-playbook.html
Although it has romance and comedy..to me this is a uplifting family movie for Roosters and Hens (Adults-because of R-rating) and will encourage families/groups to see it.

I also liked him in Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara.
Maria, if the dad takes son to Race 2, maybe I will check this one out, else I will take him.
Is the R-rated part workable for my 14-year-old? She has watched quite a few tv-14, with a little bit nudity, etc and she has tried 500 times to convince me that a little bit nudity, etc is OK for her. I think she had said she wanted to watch this w/her friend, but maybe I had refused at that time. Or maybe I let her... hmm, my memory is going bad. The dad took them to the mall quite a bit in last one month, so maybe they slipped in this one. It's very easy to fool him. Will ask her when she gets up.

Tracy,
Although, there are only a few scenes with some nudity and some violence,
would not recommend this for anyone under 16. But, I think- you will like this movie.

Just asked her. She had not seen it. But listening to our convo, the dad interjected, saying it's not for her maybe. Turns out he has watched it on his own. I asked how it was, he said it's alright. Which means he slept thru it, he has slept through 98% of the movies he has seen so far. So his f/b doesn't count. Hmm.

I saw django unchained recently. It has few sensitive moments too. If you can find them then you are NOT paying attention to the most entertaining moments of the movie.

TBT,
In a strange way, kept me engaged. I like Westerns, and may not recommend this to anyone:)

With some people..to "know them" is to love them..like them.
I was introduced by Silver Linings PB..to Anupam Kher. I like him more- the more I get to read about him *although, he is stating the obvious here.
