the musical burning bush

i may have posted this article before, not sure. mallikarjun mansur's music has sustained me through some good times and really bad times. the jaunpuri that she is talking about is easily some of the most moving pieces of music i've ever heard. there aren't too many things musical that affect me in the same way. sidney bechet comes close. the pathos in mallikarjun's jaunpuri punches you in the gut. carnatic musicians do jaunpuri too, but it's usually in thukkadas and thillanas. nothing like this.
part 1:
part 2:
When I heard Mansur's Jaunpuri the first time, I knew exactly how Moses felt when he communed with the burning bush. My hair stood on end and I could not move. I was staggered by his breath control and the way one note packed into the next. I knew then that this was what I was looking for.

the recording quality is uneven, but ignore that and just immerse yourself in the music.

Re: the musical burning bush
here is a carnatic sample of jaunpuri for comparison:
i used to like this before i listened to mansur's jaunpuri.

Re: the musical burning bush
you had posted his music a while back on sulekha and that's the first piece of hindustani music that i listened to fully. it is very evocative and beautiful.

mansur in a very unusual mood:
he is beautiful as usual, but some very lively, almost aggressive taan singing.

same scale, but i think sohini is closer to hamsanandi. sohini, marwa, and puriya all have the same scale except they have different pakads and chalans. here is a writeup of the differences between the three:

listen to kumar gandharva's sohini:
for a lay listener like me, sohini has a much lighter touch and marwa has a much heavier contemplative feel.

an example from the movie world is jhoomti chali hawa:
mukesh does a nice job of sohini. the other example is kuhu kuhu bole kohaliya. but it has the irritating voice of lata mangeshkar, so i refuse to post that example.

Re: the musical burning bush
whenever this talk of southern indians who have gone outside of their cultural milieu comes up, i am always reminded of the very finest hindustani vocalist i've ever had the pleasure of listening to. nothing in hindustani music to me comes within miles of this man's music. musically he is in the rarest of rare realms and all alone. this discussion of mangeshkar, usha uthup and all those hariharan whatsisname shankar fellas brought this thread back to my conscious memory and i was motivated to go back and listen to that old jaunpuri. it's too intense for me to listen too often, but i just did. goosebumps.
