bw:

# 5 PALING, # 10 CRAM, #1 PROVERB are all correct.
#7 SLATE is incorrect.

Only #s 6 & 7 remain.

hint: The answer is staring at you.

7. Color that’s constant in salt water. (5)
hint: The "constant" is a well known mathematical constant.

I too was apprehensive about cluing "deserved" with "congruous." I could use "fit/suitable/appropriate," but then solving it becomes too easy, especially since it's a hidden clue. Also, "congruous" is a synonym for "deserved" in one of its usages, so I went with it.

Main Entry: appropriate
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: suitable
Synonyms: adapted, applicable, appurtenant, apropos, apt, becoming, befitting, belonging, congruous, convenient, correct, deserved , desired, due, felicitous, fit, fitting, germane, good, just, on the button, on the nose, opportune, pertinent, proper, relevant, right, rightful, seemly, tailor-made, true, useful, well-suited, well-timed

ANSWERS with explanations.
1. Trite remark for verbal brevity. (7) ------- PROVERB -- PRO (for)+VERBal
2. Bug poster – “swap love for note.” (6) -- PESTER --- in POSTER replace O with E (the musical note)
3. Horrible rogues turning on me. ( 8 ) GRUESOME ----- ROGUES - anag + ME
4. Figure reportedly ruined corner. (9) ---- RECTANGLE --- WRECKED ANGLE -- homophone
5. Part of fence turning white. (6) ----- PALING (dd)
6. Congruous tirade served undercover. ( 8 ) ----- DESERVED (hidden)
7. Color that’s constant in salt water. (5) ---- SEPIA ---- SE(PI)A
8. Get a bin to spin. (6) ---- OBTAIN (A BIN TO -- anag)
9. Be around in court for reasoned argument. DEBATE ----- D(EB)ATE -- DATE for "court" (romance meaning) and BE is turned around inside DATE
10.Squeeze the overturned wine residue. (4) ----- Wine residue is MARC. Reverse it (overturn) for CRAM which means squeeze in.

Thanks SS, GC, HA, BW for participating. Everyone, please try your hand in the future sets.
