Oh, you were being serious? I thought you were making a joke. The correct greeting is salaam-o-aleikum, and it means "peace be with you." The normal response is wa aleikum salaam, which means "and peace be with you as well." (The word salaam means peace -- not salute -- and is the root of the words Islam and salaamat that is used in everyday Hindi).

According to Muslim belief, Allah is a rather diligent accountant. Every time someone greets you, he wants you to respond with a greeting that is at least as good, or even better. He said in the Quran that if you don't respond with something as good or better, it goes in the little notebook he keeps about you. (He can make his handwriting arbitrarily small and still read it, so he can fit all your deeds in one little notebook.) Most SuCHers don't do well in Allah's judgment, particularly when it comes to greetings.
