would you choose to be
1. a lower-caste, lower middle-class indina man/woman of your current age in these current times
or
2. an english man/woman with a modest income of your current age in 1950?

i pick 1.
reason: 1950 is only good to read about in novels. not a good time to be alive only to die of pneumonia

** seven, my point is that lower-caste, lower middle-class indinas don't have access to health care even now. so if you pick choice 1, you're choosing to die from pneumonia. by 1950, they already had penicillin in the uk and it was widely available to everyone including very poor english people.

Re: what would you choose - part 2
in 2013, emergency medical service in India is hopeless due to clogged roads.
One should be lucky to get sic late night.
except for a minute section of Indian elite, India remains difficult for material comforts (power cuts, water shortages, street violence and corruption).
people who are born in india understand those realities and lead their lives rather contended with what they have. they understand one simple fact better than many of us who are materially more blessed that happiness is a frame of mind that is more related to human relationships than physical things.
the wide availability of pace makers in the USA 15 years did not bother indians who were ignorant of its existence. Now relatively wide use of stents and pace makers make the availability and affordability of such devices a part of middle class happiness calculus. can any one say that people of 2013 are more happy than people of 1980s and 90s?

women got no right on father's property if they married. even if i'm poor, i can still work my way up in today's india. and become a writer only if i want to...meaning i have options.
i like options.
