What happens when fashion seculars start celebrating Holi?
Yesterday, on NDTV, they showed a couple of young men applying holi colors on tourist goris. They were actually feeling the women along the way! One guy was going overboard applying on not just the cheeks but also on other parts. The girls were clearly feeling awkward. What traditionally was celebrated as a combination of the spring festival and a metaphorical expression of Hindu philosophy has become an outlet for deprived desi youngsters to feel young women. Just wondering what kind of ideas atheists get when they participate in Holi celebration. Hmm.......

yeah..during holi, the girls in our group always asked us to shield them from miscreants and we did.
what does feeling up a girl during holi have to do with atheism?

Unkil, feeling up women is integral to the tradition of Holi and part of that metaphorical expression of Hindu philosophy. It's all about seeking unity with the female principle and participating in the endless circle of life. Of course, truly enlightened souls like you who have never mounted a woman are exempt from such worldly burden.

Yeah, I heard about Garba in Gujrat. Obvously, Holi is similar. But then, the youth in India don't need Garba or Holi. They just need to get into a crowded city bus.

True. But unlike back in your days, young women these days tend to be very discriminating. They don't take kindly to metaphorical expressions of Hindu philosophy by strangers who don't look like Brad Pitt, that too in a crowded bus. The outcomes can be very unhappy for aforementioned youth, including potential jail time (under the new law). OTOH, that might put the fear of God in them >> fewer atheists on the streets.

is that deepika padukone? she has the brightest smile that can light an entire town..
@ OP
it's true. men act as pigs on holi especially. i smtiems doubt if ancient ppl in dwapar yug etc were as gentlemanly as they are depicted in books. maybe they were. they fought for women's rights. like cheerharan not acceptable.
oh but the other guys were also from same yug and they didnt respect women. so howcome they played holi with no hanky panky. sth doesn't sit well...so much for ancient expression n philosophy
100s of years later, when people read about our traditions, they will have good amount of data from different sources to paint a clear picture of our type. in olden days there were no newspapers i think. they wrote what the king liked.

Here is how they are depicted... the "bad guys" try to disrobe a woman in public in order to shame her. The "good guys" treat their wife as their property and gamble her away just like they gamble away all their land and money. In the face of all that gentlemanly behavior, all that the all-powerful god can do is drape the unfortunate woman with clothes from the sky. Even god himself in those days did NOT think gambling away one's wife was a bad idea; he didn't stop the "good guys" from doing it. He in fact helped the "good guys" even after they had needlessly treated their wife as nothing more than property.seven wrote:i smtiems doubt if ancient ppl in dwapar yug etc were as gentlemanly as they are depicted in books. maybe they were. they fought for women's rights. like cheerharan not acceptable.
The idea that our ancestors were better-behaved and more refined than us is most often a fantasy.

i dont think god stops us from doing anything (good or bad). he's a witness or sth
bcz for god good bad doesnt exist. anything we do is just that. its not good. not bad. for god.
also, god helps all. whoever goes to him. i'm not really a fan of him at this time hence the ..i'll post more thoughts on this. later.

He stopped the "bad guys" from successfully disrobing her. He wasn't just a witness.seven wrote:i dont think god stops us from doing anything (good or bad). he's a witness or sth
Later in the same book, he says whenever good is threatened or bad is on the ascendant, he comes to restore good.seven wrote:bcz for god good bad doesnt exist. anything we do is just that. its not good. not bad. for god.

Vakavaka garu,
So what is the source of this pious holi celebration story?
Have you heard the saying " pandaga putaina patha mogudena?" (The same old husband even on festial day?)
Story goes that holi participants drop theirs upper garments in a tub and whoever gets the garments gets to spend the night with owner of the garment. Sometimes husband picks the garment of his own wife.
for those interested in more details read tapi dharma rao's book.
