Regulate social media-- salman kurshid
“Social media is effective today because we are equal. It is the equality of social media and your ability to manipulate and use technology that gives you the freedom -- a freedom which then, perhaps, needs to be regulated. It needs to be regulated because every freedom has to be regulated" and he adds “Please read the Constitution and if you are a true Indian, please bow to the Constitution which says reasonable restriction on all your freedom - on your freedom of speech, freedom of work, freedom of action”.

Interestingly there is yet no regulatory body or watchdog for the television media and the news channels have an absolute free run in their conduct and airing of content.

There is no need to grant the power to regulate social media to the government. Indian regulators are good at killing what they regulate. Instead of trying to regulate social media -- something repressive regimes like China and Iran do -- Khurshid should figure out ways for his party to stay relevant and engaged on social media.

Better yet, salman's party should stop illegal shananigans that make people vent on social media. Congress is all for freedom till it is criticized. Hypocrites.

infact the govt. is already out there regulating social media. you might have heard of sec 66A of IT act that received furore after incidents like arrest of aseem trivedi over cartoons, two palghar girls over criticism on facebook - of shut-down in Mumbai after the death of Bal Thackeray, etc. the section criminalises the communication not on the basis of content, but the medium, because the same communication would be deemed legal if published in newspaper, but if put on internet, it would attract three years in jail. if not for the courts we would have treading the path of china and alike.trofimov wrote:There is no need to grant the power to regulate social media to the government. As for congress staying relevant with social media the I&B ministry has started twitter nrega recruiting some congress activists but that was a total failure. congress has found ways to make main stream media its chamcha but the social media, its too hot to handle for them.
